A pile of unopened post you’re pretending isn’t there? Same.
Why is admin so hard?
Admin is boring, confusing and often urgent. That’s a tough mix for AuDHD brains. The ADHD side avoids boring tasks. The autistic side can freeze at vague, confusing wording or phone calls.
Avoiding the post isn’t laziness. It’s overwhelm.
Letters, forms and bills are small tasks that cause a great deal of stress. They are dull, which makes them hard for the ADHD side to start. They are often written in unclear official language, which the autistic side finds hard to interpret. Many involve a phone call. So the post stays unopened, deadlines pass, and late fees appear for bills you could easily have paid. Then shame makes the pile even harder to face.
Why it piles up
A quick comparison:
| Autistic side | ADHD side |
|---|---|
| Confusing official language | Too boring to start |
| Forms that don’t fit | Losing the letter |
| Follow-up phone calls | Missing deadlines |
| Fear of getting it wrong | Too many steps |
Small tasks, big overwhelm.
What it can look like
It varies from person to person, but it often includes:
- A pile of unopened letters
- Dread every time the post arrives
- Paying late fees on bills you could afford
- Forms half-filled for weeks
- Relief, then shame, when it’s finally done
Tame the pile
- Open post straight away: Or on one set day.
- One tray for admin: Everything in one place.
- Sort into three: Do, file, bin.
- Go paperless: Email and apps where you can.
- Automate bills: Direct debits on payday.
Make it doable
- A weekly admin hour: Same time, with music.
- Body double: Do it alongside someone.
- One task at a time: Just this form.
- Ask for help: Citizens Advice can help with forms.
- Reward yourself: Admin deserves a treat.
Where to start
Give admin one place and one regular time. Open post as it arrives, or on a set day each week, and sort it into do, file and bin. Move to email and automatic payments where you can. Doing it alongside someone else helps. If you are stuck, advice services can go through forms with you.
The bottom line
One letter at a time.
This post is for awareness, not financial or legal advice. In the UK, Citizens Advice can help with forms and letters.
